Ben Banneker was an American astronomer whilst Thomas Jefferson was president. At this time racism was extremely present in American society. Ben Banneker wrote a letter of advice to the president explaining why he should help black people in America. In this letter Mr. Banneker presented the president with four main points. The first point was the discrimination of black individuals was going against Christianity. The second point was that colored people can be just as sophisticated as white people, but are treated unfairly and unequal. The third point is that Jefferson was being hypocritical about the treatment of black people, because he is letting black people be treated the way the American people were being treated by the British when Jefferson fought against them. The fourth point is that helped wright the constitution that protects human rights but black people are not receiving these rights in society.
The significance of this lesson is that people get to really see how one of our "great" leaders was not a leader and ignored people who reached out to him about issues that faced their society then. This letter lets readers understand the flaws in the presidential system, questions arise from these realizations about Jefferson. Would people still vote for him in 2017? How would people react to his ideas about racism?
