The N-Word Lesson

This terrible word first saw use in the 16th century it was used to remind enslaved Portuguese people that in the society they were nothing, they were worthless. The prefix of this word "Ni" means nothing or negative and the suffix "Er" means actor or doer which together translates to a nothing person or negative doer. It delegitimizes  humans into worthless people. There are four definitions that people use the N-word for, 1) White to black derogatory    2) Black to black fraternal    3) Black to black derogatory    4) Non-black to (any) fraternal

This lesson definitely made me more aware of the word and made me realize the significance of this word and really made me think about all the painful ways it has been used in the past and present. And makes me think more deeply into how the word will be used in the future. Will people build on the idea of it being a brotherly greeting? Or will our society bounce back in history and return to it being a daily saying to a group of discriminated people? It bothers me everyday seeing and hearing people in high political positions in our country's government talk with such vulgar language about sexuality and people's ethnicity. I think our country is taking a step backwards into using the N-word for worse rather than better.
